Low Incidence

A number of students in ASEC districts have disabilities such as autism, physical and other health impairments, traumatic brain injury, vision or hearing impairments.   Because of the low numbers of these disabilities in any district, the cooperative provides itinerant staff and consultants to assist the districts in serving these students.

In addition to certified teachers of the deaf/hard of hearing, the cooperative provides sign language interpreters for those students whose primary means of communication is sign.  The vision consultants provide academic support to staff and students with vision impairments.  Braille and orientation and mobility training are also available through the ASEC for those students in need of these services.

ASEC has three autism consultants to assist the districts with the unique needs of children with autism spectrum disorder. Each consultant is highly qualified in all aspects of autism however specializes in preschool, elementary/junior high, or high school/transition age. Other consultants are available for physical and other health impairments and traumatic brain injury.

A lending library which includes such items as communication devices and other adaptive equipment is available for districts to try with students who have special technology needs.
